When it comes to online gambling, Colorado appears to be right in the middle of things. While online casinos and poker haven’t been legalized in the state just yet, online sportsbooks have been. You can also place bets for horse races online.
This means there is potential for online casinos in Colorado, but it is still early to tell.
You may not be able to wager at online casinos, but there is a long list of open land-based casinos in the state. Find out about everything casino related in CO, from current laws, venues, history, and more, here in our guide.
Online Casinos in Colorado
Although Colorado has a long tradition with some great land-based casinos, it has not legalized online casinos. There appears to be little motion toward legalization at this point.
Colorado does have a state lottery, which can indicate an openness to other forms of betting.
The nearest state to Colorado with online casinos happens to be Nevada. Nevada offers some great poker through the World Series of Poker (WSOP) website and downloadable app.
But, you can still register with a legal online casino while you’re in Colorado. That means you can get the casino’s bonus offers or deposit, and then play whenever you’re in states where it’s legal.
Land-based Casinos in Colorado
Colorado is home to over 30 land-based casinos that are spread throughout the mountain towns of Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek. Black Hawk and Central City are only a mile apart, making it easy to go back and forth between the two.
There are also two Colorado casinos affiliated with Indian Tribes (which abide by Colorado’s limited gaming rules) in Ignacio and Towaoc.
Since online casinos haven’t been legalized in CO yet, players have to head to the closest brick and mortar to legally gamble. There are a lot of advantages to playing at land-based casinos in CO:
- Gambling hotspots like Black Hawk and Central City are very close to each other, with multiple casinos located on one street.
- Big game selection to choose from.
- Some CO casino venues are smaller than others, ensuring visitors have options for both loud and quiet casino atmospheres.

History of Gambling in Colorado
Gambling has existed in Colorado since the 1800s, where it began as card games being played in saloons. At one point, gambling in CO was even considered to be a professional job.
Towards the end of the 19th century, a town called Leadville became the state’s gambling hotspot. This is where famous gamblers like Doc Holliday and Ben Thomspon spent a lot of their time. A lot of stories have been told over the years of how these men, and others, would show their dissatisfaction after losing money at the table by shooting out lights or at each other.
Gambling was eventually deemed illegal in the state until 1990. It took one year for CO to pass a bill legalizing casinos.
When CO casinos were initially introduced in 1991 it was limited in that only electronic games (including slots, video poker, video blackjack, and video keno) and the table games of poker, blackjack, let it ride and three-card poker was allowed. Plus, a single wager could not exceed $5.
All that changed, however, on July 2, 2009, when the maximum bet at all Colorado casinos was raised to $100, plus the games of craps and roulette were added to the mix. Additionally, the casinos in Colorado were allowed to stay open for 24 hours, rather than having to be closed between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Colorado Gambling Laws and Regulatory Organizations
There are a few ways you can gamble legally in CO, including going to casinos and participating in the state lottery. The following is a list of all legal forms of gambling available in Colorado:
- Social wagering
- Playing in CO casinos
- Lottery
- Bingo and raffles
- Horse racing (must be under the Colorado Division of Racing)
The minimum gambling age at all Colorado casinos is 21, including Indian casinos. Online casinos are strictly prohibited and can result in misdemeanor or felony charges for those caught playing online.
Most recently online sportsbooks have been legalized in CO, and already almost half a dozen operators have launched a sports betting platform with a lot more on the way. You may also wager on horse races from your mobile or desktop device.
While more land-based casino have closed than new ones have opened their doors over the last ten years, CO is counting on the sportsbook industry to bring the casino economy back to life.
The Colorado Division of Gaming
The Colorado Division of Gaming is responsible for monitoring all gaming in the state. These responsibilities include ensuring every casino is operating under a legal license and doing regular random check-ins undercover. They must also test every game before it makes its way to the casino floor which is done in the test labs.
The CDG is run by the Colorado Department of Revenue. For more information on the CDG, you can visit their site: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/enforcement/gaming
Gambling in Colorado Today
As far as gambling goes in Colorado today, players have a good selection of casinos on land with sports betting online. Since online sports betting is new in the state, it’s hard to predict the effects it will have down the road in the market. If things go well, it would make sense for CO to look into legalizing more than just sportsbook online.
Online poker was last brought up in the state back in 2013, and nothing seems to have changed in terms of progress since then.
In 2018, CO land-based casinos broke records in the state with the amount of revenue brought in. Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, and Central City brought in a combined total of $842 million. You can read more about recent statistics and revenue from CO casinos, here.
